Veteran Bengali Actor and Politician Joy Banerjee Passes Away at 62
Kolkata | August 25, 2025 — The world of Bengali cinema and politics is mourning the death of Joy Banerjee, a beloved actor and former BJP leader. He breathed his last on Monday morning at 11:35 a.m. in a private hospital in Kolkata, following a prolonged battle with respiratory complications and pneumonia. He was 62.
A Journey Through Cinema
Born on May 25, 1963, Joy Banerjee entered Tollywood in 1982 with the film Aparupa, opposite Debashree Roy. With his charm and talent, he quickly rose to prominence through notable works like Hirak Jayanti, Milan Tithi, Chopper, and Naagmoti.
Known for his versatility, Banerjee often shared screen space with leading stars such as Tapas Pal, Shatabdi Roy, and Mahua Roychowdhury, leaving behind a legacy that remains etched in the hearts of cine-lovers across Bengal.
From Silver Screen to Politics
Banerjee stepped into politics in 2014, contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Birbhum as a BJP candidate, and later from Uluberia. While he never secured a parliamentary seat, his presence was widely acknowledged. However, in 2021, he resigned from the party citing personal and ideological concerns, stepping back from active political life.
Health Struggles and Final Days
He was admitted to a Kolkata hospital on August 15 due to complications from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and diabetes. His condition deteriorated rapidly, and he was put on ventilator support on August 17. Despite doctors’ efforts, he succumbed to a massive cardiac arrest on August 25.
