Chand Nikla! Varanasi Women Break Karwa Chauth Vrat with Devotion & Joy
Karwa Chauth 2025: Chand Darshan at 8:03 PM in Varanasi
On October 10, 2025, Varanasi witnessed a divine celebration of Karwa Chauth. Married women, or suhaagins, observed a strict nirjala vrat—a fast without food or water—for 14 hours, praying for their husbands’ long life and happiness. As the moon (Chand) peeked through the clouds at 8:03 PM, rooftops echoed with chants of “Har Har Mahadev”

Karwa Chauth Katha: The Story Behind the Ritual
After sunset, women gathered in groups to perform the Karwa Chauth puja. Dressed in solah shringar (16 adornments), they listened to the Karwa Chauth Katha, which narrates the tale of Veeravati, a devoted wife whose fast saved her husband’s life. This story, told during the puja, reinforces the power of love, faith, and devotion.
Women offered bhog (fruits and sweets) to Karwa Mata, and performed the karwa ferna ritual—rotating the decorated pot in a circle. The first arghya (water offering) was made to Chandradev through a sieve (chalni), followed by prayers to Lord Shiva and Karwa Mata
Rituals Across Varanasi Colonies
In areas like Santraghuvar Nagar, Amar Nagar, Siddhgiri Bagh, and Mahmoorganj, women from Sindhi, Punjabi, and Marwari communities celebrated together. The atmosphere was festive, with decorated thalis, mehndi designs, and traditional songs. Families joined on rooftops, waiting for the moonrise to complete the vrat.
Vrat Parana: Breaking the Fast
Once the moon appeared, women saw Chand through the chalni, offered water, and broke their fast by sipping water from their husbands’ hands. This emotional moment symbolizes trust and eternal bonding. Many visited temples like Dakshineshwari Kali Mandir, Shivalayas, and Ganesh Mandirs for final prayers
Puja Muhurat & Nakshatra
This year’s Karwa Chauth fell under Krittika Nakshatra and Siddhi Yog, considered highly auspicious. Women began their day with a bath, took the sankalp (vow), and prepared for the evening rituals. The puja was performed with jal, akshat, pushp, and dravyas—essential items for invoking divine blessings.
Gifts & Celebrations
Husbands expressed their love by giving thoughtful gifts—sarees, jewelry, and heartfelt notes. Social media buzzed with pictures of couples celebrating the festival. The emotional depth of Karwa Chauth goes beyond rituals—it’s a celebration of akhand suhaag (eternal marital bliss).
