Heavy Rains Lash Mumbai, IMD Issues Alert for Tonight and Tomorrow
Mumbai witnessed heavy rainfall today, causing waterlogging in several low-lying areas and disrupting normal life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the city tonight, warning of intense showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
According to IMD officials, a cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea and an active monsoon trough are responsible for the enhanced rainfall activity. The suburbs, including Andheri, Borivali, and Chembur, reported significant water accumulation, leading to traffic snarls during peak hours. Local train services on the Central and Western lines were delayed due to water on the tracks, while some flights at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport faced minor delays.
The IMD has predicted that the downpour will continue tonight, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.6 mm to 204.4 mm) in some areas. Residents have been advised to avoid venturing out unless necessary and to stay alert for possible flooding in vulnerable zones.
For tomorrow, the IMD has issued a yellow alert, indicating moderate to heavy rain at isolated places. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has deployed pumps and emergency teams to manage waterlogging and ensure swift response to any rain-related incidents.
Authorities have urged citizens to monitor weather updates and follow advisories. With high tides expected during the evening, low-lying areas like Dadar, Sion, and Kurla may face additional challenges. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
