🌧️ Pune Rains Trigger Flood Crisis in Pimpri-Chinchwad: 950 Residents Evacuated
Pune, August 20, 2025 — Torrential rains have wreaked havoc across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, prompting emergency evacuations and triggering flood-like conditions in several low-lying areas. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) confirmed that over 950 residents were relocated to safer shelters as water levels surged due to heavy discharge from upstream dams.
Dam Discharges Raise Alarm
Authorities reported that Mulshi and Pavana dams released a combined 50,000 cusecs of water into the Mula and Pavana rivers, causing rivers to swell dangerously. The Khadakwasla dam also discharged 35,000 cusecs, inundating parts of Pune city including Ekta Nagar, Sinhagad Road, and Yerawada.
PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh assured that disaster management teams were working round the clock. “We’ve activated control rooms across all zones and deployed emergency response units to monitor riverbanks and assist with evacuations,” he said.

Areas Affected & Relief Measures
Evacuations were carried out in multiple zones:
- Pimpri: 75 residents from Bhatnagar shifted to Buddhavihar Hall
- Kiwale & Kalewadi: 628 residents moved to MHADA units and Valhekarwadi School
- Pimple Nilakh & Bopkhel: Over 70 residents relocated to PCMC schools
- Sanjay Gandhi Nagar & Pimple Gurav: 170 residents shifted to Kamala Nehru School and Bhagat Singh School
Temporary shelters have been equipped with food, water, electricity, and medical aid. Additional support was provided to migrant workers at construction sites, who were moved into vacant MHADA flats.
Pune City Also Hit Hard
In Pune, the Municipal Corporation (PMC) evacuated over 200 residents from flood-prone areas such as Warje-Karvenagar, Shivajinagar, Dhole Patil Road, and Khadki. Relief centres have been set up across the city, with boats, ambulances, and PMPML buses deployed for rescue operations.
PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram visited affected zones and urged residents to cooperate with evacuation efforts. “We’ve made arrangements in all vulnerable areas. Citizens must prioritize safety,” he said.
