Gen Z decide… Sushila Karki Accepts !

Kathmandu, Nepal

In a historic turn of events, Nepal’s former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has accepted the role of interim Prime Minister following a wave of Gen-Z-led protests that toppled the government of KP Sharma Oli. The 73-year-old jurist, known for her integrity and anti-corruption stance, vowed to honor the youth who lost their lives in the uprising and rebuild a more just and inclusive Nepal.

A Nation in Turmoil, A Generation in Revolt

The protests erupted on September 8 after the government imposed a sweeping ban on social media platforms, citing cybersecurity and tax concerns. But the ban was merely the spark. Years of frustration over corruption, unemployment, and political stagnation boiled over as thousands of young Nepalis took to the streets in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, and Birgunj.

What followed was the most violent unrest in two decades:

  • Over 30 people were killed, including several youth protesters
  • More than 1,000 were injured in clashes with security forces
  • Parliament and key government buildings were torched
  • A mass jailbreak saw over 7,000 prisoners escape nationwide

The Rise of Sushila Karki: A Symbol of Integrity

Amid the chaos, Gen-Z protesters rallied around a surprising figure: Sushila Karki, Nepal’s first female Chief Justice. In a virtual meeting attended by over 5,000 youth, her name was overwhelmingly endorsed to lead the transitional government.

Karki accepted the role with humility and resolve:

“The Gen-Z group led the recent movement in Nepal, and they trusted me to lead the government for a short period. I have accepted their request,” she told CNN-News18.

She pledged to prioritize justice for the slain youth and to restore peace, dignity, and democratic order.

Military Oversight and Fragile Calm

With the government dissolved and the army temporarily in control, curfews remain in effect across Kathmandu Valley. The military has promised to support the interim government in organizing fresh elections within six months.

Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, who declined to lead the interim government himself, endorsed Karki’s appointment and urged youth to remain calm and united.

Rebuilding Nepal: A New Mandate

Karki’s leadership marks a rare moment of generational convergence: a seasoned jurist chosen by digital-native youth to guide a wounded nation. Her immediate priorities include:

  • Supporting families of slain protesters
  • Restoring civil liberties and lifting curfews
  • Organizing free and fair elections
  • Rebuilding trust in public institutions

Her appointment has drawn praise from both domestic and international observers, with many comparing her to transitional leaders like Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh.

A Promise to the Fallen

As Nepal mourns its dead and looks toward an uncertain future, Sushila Karki’s words resonate deeply:

“Our immediate focus will be something for the young people who died during the protest. Their sacrifice must not be in vain.”

In a country long plagued by instability, the Gen-Z uprising and Karki’s rise may signal the beginning of a new chapter—one written by youth, guided by wisdom, and rooted in justice.
