Swiggy, Zomato, Amazon, Blinkit Gig Workers Announce All-India Strike on Christmas & New Year’s Eve
Nationwide Strike Announced
The gig workers strike India December 2025 is set to disrupt deliveries across major platforms. Workers associated with Swiggy, Zomato, Zepto, Blinkit, Amazon, and Flipkart have announced an all-India strike on Christmas (December 25) and New Year’s Eve (December 31, 2025).
The strike, called by the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT) and the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union, highlights growing unrest among India’s gig workforce.
Why Are Gig Workers Protesting?
Workers say they face:
- Long working hours with declining earnings.
- Unsafe delivery targets during peak demand.
- Arbitrary account deactivations without explanation.
- Lack of welfare benefits despite high workloads.
The unions argue that the “10-minute delivery” model puts lives at risk, forcing riders into unsafe conditions to meet unrealistic timelines.
Key Demands of Gig Workers
The unions have listed several demands:
- Transparent and fair pay structures.
- Withdrawal of 10-minute delivery models.
- End to account blocking without due process.
- Improved safety gear and accident insurance.
- Assured work allocation without algorithmic discrimination.
Other demands include:
- Stronger grievance redressal for routing and payment failures.
- Job security and social security (health insurance, accident coverage, pension).
- Respect and dignity at work.
Allegations Against Companies
Workers allege that companies blackmail those who join unions. According to IFAT vice president Mohammad Inayat Ali, delivery workers are being “pushed to the breaking point” by unsafe work models and falling incomes.
Ali added:
“The government can no longer remain a silent spectator while platform companies profit at the cost of workers’ lives.”

Government’s Role & New Laws
The workers are urging both Central and state governments to:
- Regulate platform companies.
- Enforce labour protections.
- Implement social security frameworks.
- Recognise the right of gig workers to organise and collectively bargain.
While Karnataka introduced the Platform-Based Gig Workers (Social Security and Welfare) Act, 2025, unions say its implementation has been weak.
Impact on Christmas & New Year
The strike is timed to hit peak demand days — Christmas and New Year’s Eve. These are periods when food delivery, grocery apps, and e-commerce platforms see massive orders.
Consumers may face:
- Delayed or cancelled deliveries.
- Higher surge pricing if fewer workers are available.
- Limited availability of groceries, meals, and festive essentials.
Why This Strike Matters
India’s gig economy employs millions, powering platforms like Swiggy, Zomato, Amazon, and Blinkit. The strike highlights:
- Fragile working conditions in the gig sector.
- Growing demand for regulation and social security.
- Potential disruption to urban lifestyles dependent on instant delivery.
If successful, the strike could force companies and policymakers to rethink gig work models.
