It’s a time for families to gather, perform Lakshmi-Ganesh Puja, decorate their homes with diyas (दीये), and burst green firecrackers (हरित पटाखे).

This year, Diwali falls on Kartik Amavasya (कार्तिक अमावस्या) which begins on the evening of October 20 and ends on October 21.

Firecracker Rules in Delhi-NCR & Other Regions

This year, the Supreme Court has allowed bursting only green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR under strict guidelines.

🎇 Important Safety Note:
Delhi has already implemented GRAP Stage 2 due to rising pollution. If air quality worsens, Stage 3 restrictions may follow.

Where Else Is Diwali Celebrated Worldwide?

Diwali is not limited to India. It’s celebrated with joy in:

  • Nepal (as Tihar Festival)
  • Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Fiji
  • Singapore, Malaysia, Trinidad & Tobago
  • Large Indian communities in USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand

The message of light, prosperity (समृद्धि), and victory resonates across cultures and countries.

Regional Updates: Diwali Celebrations in Himachal Pradesh

In Shimla, all HRTC buses will stop operating after 5 PM on October 20 to ease congestion during Lakshmi Puja. Even private buses will stop after 7 PM.

This ensures safety and allows bus drivers and conductors to celebrate the festival with family.

Owl Protection During Diwali: Forest Department Alert

In parts of Uttarakhand (especially in Corbett Tiger Reserve, Ramnagar, and Terai West Forests), authorities have heightened patrolling to protect owls (उल्लू).

Due to superstitions, owls are illegally used in rituals during Diwali, despite being protected under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 (Schedule I).

🔒 Punishment for harming owls: Up to 3 years in prison.

Diwali Train Travel: Special Trains Still Empty!

Despite Indian Railways running special trains during Diwali, many passengers still prefer regular trains. Interestingly, special trains are going half-empty, especially those toward the North-East, while regular ones are fully booked for a month!

🎫 Tip: If you’re heading to hometowns, check for special trains availability!

Puja Safety Precautions You Must Follow

✔️ Wear clean clothes, preferably white or traditional Indian attire.
✔️ Avoid silk or synthetic while lighting diyas.
✔️ Use eco-friendly decorations & firecrackers.
✔️ Keep fire extinguishers or water nearby.
✔️ Ensure children are supervised during firework displays.
