Controversy Erupts as Trailer Launch of ‘The Bengal Files’ Halted in Kolkata

The trailer launch of filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri’s latest project, The Bengal Files, was marred by high drama and political tension in Kolkata, sparking a nationwide debate on artistic freedom and censorship.

The Bengal Files

🚫 Trailer Launch Disrupted

Scheduled to premiere at a five-star hotel in Kolkata on August 16, the trailer event was abruptly halted midway by Kolkata Police. Agnihotri, known for his provocative films like The Kashmir Files, alleged that the disruption was politically motivated and described the incident as “anarchy” and “dictatorship”.

“The trailer launch of a CBFC-approved movie was stopped. Police are being used in Bengal because of some people’s political ambitions,” Agnihotri told reporters.

🔥 Political Firestorm

The film, which explores the communal violence in undivided Bengal during the 1940s—particularly the events surrounding Direct Action Day—has already stirred controversy. Agnihotri claimed that multiple venues backed out due to “political pressure,” forcing him to shift the launch to a banquet hall.

The situation escalated when police allegedly cut power and confiscated equipment during the screening. The filmmaker and his team, including actress Pallavi Joshi, were reportedly prevented from speaking to the media.

🎭 The Film’s Content and Cast

The Bengal Files features veteran actors like Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher (portraying Mahatma Gandhi), Darshan Kumar, and Pallavi Joshi. The film critiques Gandhi’s non-violent approach and delves into demographic shifts and communal tensions.

Agnihotri emphasized that the film had received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification and had already been screened in 12 U.S. cities.

🗳️ Political Reactions

The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) dismissed Agnihotri’s claims, calling the film a “political video” and accusing him of aligning with BJP interests. TMC leaders challenged him to make films on other controversial topics like the Godhra riots or Manipur unrest.

Meanwhile, BJP leaders condemned the disruption and hosted a screening of the trailer at their Salt Lake office later that evening.

📅 Release Date

Despite the chaos, The Bengal Files is slated for theatrical release on September 5, 2025, coinciding with Teachers’ Day. The producers have vowed to proceed with legal action and ensure the film reaches audiences nationwide.
