The ‘New Wall’ of Indian cricket bids an emotional goodbye
Cheteshwar Pujara, one of India’s most dependable Test batsmen, has officially retired from all formats of Indian cricket. Fondly known as the ‘Naya Wall’ for his resilience and grit at the crease, Pujara made the announcement through a heartfelt post on social media, marking the end of a remarkable chapter in Indian cricket.
In his farewell message, Pujara reflected on the journey that began in Rajkot and led him to the grand stage of international cricket. “Wearing the Indian jersey, singing the national anthem, and giving my best for the team—these are moments that words can’t capture,” he wrote. “But all good things must come to an end. I’ve decided to retire from all formats of cricket.”
Pujara expressed deep gratitude to the BCCI, Saurashtra Cricket Association, and the many mentors, coaches, and teammates who shaped his career. He also acknowledged the support of franchise and county cricket teams, and thanked the entire ecosystem—from net bowlers and analysts to umpires and media—for their contributions. His message was especially touching when he mentioned his family—his wife Pooja, daughter Aditi, and close friends—for being his pillars of strength. “Now, I look forward to spending more time with them,” he added.
Having made his international debut in 2010, Pujara played 103 Test matches for India, scoring 7,195 runs, including three double centuries, 19 centuries, and 35 fifties. Though his ODI career was brief—just five matches with 51 runs—his legacy in Test cricket remains unmatched. His last appearance in Indian whites came against Australia in 2023.
With his retirement, Indian cricket bids farewell to a player who embodied patience, discipline, and quiet determination—qualities that made him a true guardian of the crease.
