Delhi Cold Wave IMD Forecast: What’s Happening

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted cold wave conditions in Delhi between January 2 and 5, with dense fog expected to blanket the city till January 6. The national capital is already reeling under chilly weather, and the situation is likely to worsen.

According to IMD, a cold wave is declared when the minimum temperature drops 4.5–6.5°C below the normal average.

  • Maximum temperature: 17.3°C (two notches below normal)
  • Minimum temperature: 10.6°C (3.7 notches above normal)
  • Visibility: Safdarjung & Palam recorded 500 metres overnight, improving to 600 metres in the morning.
  • AQI: Firmly in the ‘very poor’ category, raising health concerns.

Dense fog has reduced visibility across Delhi, affecting road, rail, and air travel.

The IMD has warned that dense to very dense fog will continue during night and morning hours till January 6.

  • Safdarjung: 500m visibility from Dec 31 night to Jan 1 morning.
  • Palam: Similar conditions, with slight improvement by 8:30 AM.
  • Poor visibility is expected to persist, impacting commuters and flights.

The IMD has also issued cold wave warnings for Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana till January 5. Northern India is expected to experience biting cold, with temperatures dipping below seasonal averages.
