Big Relief for Taxpayers — CBDT Extends ITR Deadline to Dec 10
Updated Article: CBDT Extends ITR Filing Deadline for AY 2025-26
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has officially extended the Income Tax Return (ITR) filing deadline for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26. This move brings much-needed relief to companies, partnership firms, and proprietorships whose accounts require auditing. Now, these taxpayers can file their returns by December 10, 2025, instead of the earlier deadline of October 31, 2025. Additionally, the deadline for submitting audit reports has been extended to November 10, 2025, giving professionals more time to comply with statutory obligations
Why CBDT Extended the ITR Deadline
The decision came after repeated requests from industry bodies, chartered accountants, and tax professionals. Many cited natural calamities, floods, and regional disruptions that made it difficult to complete audits and filings on time. The CBDT acknowledged these challenges and responded with a practical extension

Who Benefits from This Extension?
- Companies registered under the Companies Act
- Partnership firms and LLPs
- Proprietorships with mandatory audit requirements
- Taxpayers under clause (a) of Explanation 2 to Section 139(1)
This extension does not apply to individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), whose deadlines were already extended earlier to September 16, 2025
Filing Stats So Far
As of September 16, 2025, over 7.54 crore ITRs were filed, and 1.28 crore taxpayers paid self-assessment tax. These numbers reflect strong compliance, but the extension ensures that no taxpayer is penalized due to unavoidable delays Business Today.
