Mumbai Rains Bring City to a Standstill Amid Ganesh Festivities
IMD issues orange alert; waterlogging, traffic snarls disrupt daily life
Mumbai, August 18 — The city of Mumbai woke up to yet another rain-soaked morning as heavy showers lashed the metropolis for the third consecutive day, triggering widespread waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and delays in local train services. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and its adjoining districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall until August 19.
Despite the relentless downpour, preparations for Ganesh Chaturthi continued undeterred. Several Ganpati idols were seen being transported to mandals across the city, their bearers navigating flooded streets and congested lanes. Civic officials reported six short circuits, 19 incidents of tree or branch falls, and two wall collapses, though no injuries were recorded.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that Tulsi Lake, one of the seven reservoirs supplying drinking water to the city, began overflowing on Saturday evening. The Mithi River’s water level also rose significantly, prompting concerns about potential flooding in low-lying areas.
Commuters faced long delays on major roads, particularly the Western Express Highway near Vile Parle, where vehicles crawled through waterlogged stretches. Airlines including IndiGo and Akasa Air issued travel advisories, urging passengers to check flight statuses and allow extra time for airport transit.
Rainfall data released by the IMD showed that Mumbai City recorded 22.55 mm of rain, while the eastern suburbs received 24.18 mm and the western suburbs 17.48 mm on Saturday. With more showers expected, authorities have urged residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
