🧙♂️ The True Kerala Story: King Mahabali & Lord Vishnu
Legend tells of Mahabali, a benevolent Asura king whose reign brought peace, prosperity, and equality to Kerala. Loved by his people, Mahabali’s popularity alarmed the Devas. To test his humility, Lord Vishnu appeared as a dwarf Brahmin — Vamana — and asked for three paces of land.
- With two steps, Vamana covered the heavens and earth.
- For the third, Mahabali offered his own head, surrendering with grace.
- Impressed, Vishnu granted him a boon: to visit his people once a year.
This annual homecoming is celebrated as Onam, when Keralites welcome their beloved king with floral carpets, feasts, and festivities.
