A First in India: Mobile Theft Insurance With Recharge
Vodafone Idea (Vi) has rolled out a unique offering — recharge-linked mobile theft and loss insurance plans. This marks the first time in India that a telecom operator has bundled data vouchers with handset loss protection.
Partnering with Aditya Birla Health Insurance Company Limited (ABHICL), Vi now offers prepaid users peace of mind with coverage of up to ₹25,000 against mobile theft or loss.

Smartphones are expensive, and theft or accidental loss is a growing concern. With Vi’s new plans, users can recharge for data and simultaneously secure their handset. This innovation is designed to appeal to budget-conscious users who want both connectivity and protection.
Plan Details: Affordable Data + Insurance
Vi has introduced three prepaid data vouchers:
- ₹61 Plan
- 2GB 4G data
- Validity: 15 days
- Insurance coverage: 30 days
- ₹201 Plan
- 10GB 4G data
- Validity: 30 days
- Insurance coverage: 180 days
- ₹251 Plan
- 10GB 4G data
- Validity: 30 days
- Insurance coverage: 365 days (1 year)
Note: These are data-only vouchers. Users must have an active base prepaid plan for calls and SMS.
How the Insurance Works
- Coverage up to ₹25,000 for handset loss.
- Handset must be registered against the Vi number.
- Device must be less than three years old.
- Registration must be completed within 48 hours of receiving the SMS from ABHICL.
- If the handset doesn’t meet eligibility, users may get a refund instead of coverage.
Claim Process & Conditions
- Users must activate insurance by registering promptly.
- Claims are processed based on ABHICL’s eligibility rules.
- Coverage applies only to registered devices.
- Refunds are provided if the handset is not eligible.
