Red Fort Blast: Hyundai i20 Explosion Sparks Terror Probe, Pulwama Link Under Scanner
A high-intensity explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening has left the nation shaken. The blast, which occurred at 6:52 p.m., killed at least eight people and injured several others. The epicenter of the tragedy was a white Hyundai i20, which had been parked near the Sunehri Masjid for over three hours before it exploded while moving slowly near a traffic signal.
CCTV Footage Reveals Suspicious Activity Before Blast
According to CCTV footage, the Hyundai i20 entered the parking lot near the mosque at 3:19 p.m. and exited at 6:48 p.m.—just minutes before the explosion. The footage shows the vehicle carrying three individuals, moving slowly toward a traffic light when it detonated. The blast was so powerful that 22 nearby vehicles, including an e-rickshaw, caught fire.
Ownership Trail: From Faridabad to Pulwama
Initial investigations revealed the car was registered to Salman, a resident of Faridabad, but had recently been sold to Tariq, a man from Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir. However, the registration certificate was never officially transferred, raising concerns about fraudulent documentation and illegal vehicle transactions
Delhi Police detained Salman hours after the blast. He claimed to have sold the car months ago. Investigators are now tracing the ownership chain, suspecting the vehicle may have changed hands through questionable deals.
Forensic Teams and NIA Join Multi-Agency Probe
The National Investigation Agency (NIA), Delhi Police, and NSG are jointly investigating the incident. Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the site and confirmed that all angles—including terrorism, sabotage, and technical failure—are being explored
Interestingly, no crater was found at the blast site, and no nails or wires were embedded in the victims’ bodies—an anomaly in typical terror attacks . This has led experts to consider alternative causes, including a CNG cylinder explosion, although no confirmation has been made

Security Tightened Across Delhi and Major Cities
Following the explosion, security alerts were issued across major Indian cities. Forensic teams are analyzing the vehicle remains, and CCTV footage from surrounding areas is being reviewed. The Delhi Police have filed a case under the UAPA and Explosives Act, signaling the seriousness of the investigation
What’s Next in the Investigation?
- Tracing vehicle history and verifying ownership documents
- Forensic analysis of blast materials
- Interrogation of suspects linked to Pulwama and Faridabad
- Review of CCTV footage from Red Fort and surrounding areas
- Cross-agency coordination to rule out terror links
