Blast near Red Fort Metro: At least 8 dead, vehicles aflame, city on high alert
The car explosion near the Red Fort this evening has shaken Delhi. At least 8 people died and many more were injured, after a high-intensity blast ripped through a parked car near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station. The incident triggered fires in nearby vehicles and sent shock-waves through the historic area.
What happened and where
On Monday evening, around 7 pm, a massive explosion occurred in a car parked close to the Red Fort Metro Station (Gate No. 1) in Old Delhi. Witnesses heard a deafening boom and saw flames erupting from multiple vehicles.
The blast damaged surrounding vehicles, shattered windows in nearby buildings, and created chaos in one of Delhi’s most congested and sensitive areas.
Casualties and first response
According to official sources, 8 people were confirmed dead. Several others have been rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
The fire department rushed in seven fire tenders and other emergency units to control the blaze.
The area was promptly cordoned off by the police, including the special cell of the Delhi Police, and forensic teams have begun investigating.
Eyewitness accounts
One shopkeeper near Chandni Chowk said:
“I never heard such a loud explosion in my life. I fell three times due to the explosion. It felt as if we were all going to die…”
Another witness described seeing body parts lying on the road, and multiple cars destroyed in the fire.
The magnitude of the blast was such that buildings several hundred metres away shook.
Location & impact
The blast took place in a crowded market and heritage zone – Old Delhi near the Red Fort and Chandni Chowk — which normally houses heavy foot-traffic and is a major tourist zone. (News24)
Given the location, the explosion has triggered immediate security concerns and disrupted the usual hustle-bustle of the area. Shops closed, people scrambled to safety, and emergency units filled the narrow lanes.

Security response & high alert
In the wake of the explosion, Delhi, as well as neighbouring states and major cities, were placed on high alert. Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra (including Mumbai) issued directives to heighten security in sensitive zones, religious sites and border areas.
The involvement of elite agencies such as the National Security Guard (NSG) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been indicated, as investigations deepen.

Cause & investigation
As of now, the exact cause of the explosion remains unknown. Authorities have not confirmed whether it was a terror attack, an accident, or a technical fault.
Investigators are collecting forensic samples, and CCTV footage is being examined to piece together what triggered the blast.
One relevant context: just hours earlier a large haul of suspected explosives was seized in another part of the region — raising questions about a possible terror linkage.
What this means
The incident underscores the vulnerability of high-footfall heritage and market zones in Delhi. It also highlights how quickly an explosion in a parked car in a dense urban area can cascade into a major emergency – with casualties, fire, panic, and widespread disruption.
Given the location and timing, authorities will face pressure to enhance security prudence, public surveillance, and rapid response capabilities in Old Delhi and similar zones.
Public movement and business activities in the area may remain affected for a while as investigation and recovery proceed.
