Soon after the incident, PM Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter), expressing his deep concern. “Spoke to Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai Ji. The attack on him earlier today in the Supreme Court premises has angered every Indian. There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society. It is utterly condemnable,” he wrote.
Modi also praised Justice Gavai’s calm demeanor, saying it reflected his commitment to justice and the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution. The Prime Minister’s statement added weight to the growing calls for accountability and respect for judicial institutions.
Justice Gavai’s Calm Amid Chaos Wins Public Praise
Despite the shocking nature of the attack, Justice Gavai remained composed. Sitting alongside Justice K Vinod Chandran, he told the courtroom, “Don’t get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me.” He continued with the proceedings without pause, earning praise from legal experts and citizens alike.
His response has been widely seen as a powerful message of judicial integrity. Many on social media hailed his poise as a reflection of the strength and dignity of India’s judiciary.
⚖️ Bar Council Suspends Lawyer Over Supreme Court Outburst
The man behind the attack was identified as Rakesh Kishore, a senior lawyer enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi. He was carrying a proximity card typically issued to lawyers and clerks. Witnesses said he shouted “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge” (We won’t tolerate insults to Sanatan Dharma) as he was escorted out.
Though the Delhi Police questioned Kishore for three hours, no formal complaint was filed, and he was released. However, the Bar Council of India acted swiftly. In a strongly worded statement, they suspended Kishore’s license to practice law across India. He has been barred from appearing, acting, pleading, or practicing in any court, tribunal, or authority.
A show-cause notice was also issued, demanding Kishore explain within 15 days why further disciplinary action should not be taken. The BCI emphasized that his behavior was “inconsistent with the dignity of the court.”

“Sanatan Dharma” Slogan Sparks Religious Sensitivity Debate
The incident has reignited discussions around religious sensitivity and judicial commentary. Kishore’s slogan referenced Justice Gavai’s earlier remarks in a case involving the Vishnu idol at Khajuraho’s Javari temple. The bench had dismissed the plea to reinstall the idol, calling it “publicity interest litigation.”
Justice Gavai’s comment—“Go and ask the deity himself to do something”—was criticized by some religious groups and social media users. In response to the backlash, the Chief Justice later clarified that he respects all religions and did not intend to offend anyone.
