Youth on the Streets

Nepal, the Himalayan nation, recently witnessed massive unrest. For over a week, thousands of young people stormed the streets, challenging the government’s authority. The trigger was the sudden ban on social media. Even after the army was deployed and bullets were fired, the protests did not subside. Dozens of young people lost their lives, yet the anger only intensified. Eventually, the government was forced to backtrack and lift the ban. At the heart of this revolution stood one name—Sudan Gurung.

Who is Sudan Gurung?

At just 36 years old, Sudan Gurung has become a symbol of change and defiance for Nepal’s youth. Once a professional in event management, his life revolved around parties and entertainment. But the devastating 2015 earthquake transformed him. In its aftermath, he founded an NGO called “Hami Nepal”, dedicated to social service. From there, he emerged as a social activist, gradually becoming a voice against corruption and misgovernance.

The Spark That Lit the Movement

On September 4, 2024, the Nepalese government imposed an unexpected ban on social media platforms. For the country’s youth, this was not just an inconvenience—it was seen as a direct attack on their freedom of expression. Anger that had already been simmering against the government’s corruption and the luxurious lifestyles of politicians’ children now erupted. The hashtag #Nepokid gained momentum across platforms, intensifying the outrage.

Sudan’s Peaceful Strategy

Unlike many agitators, Sudan Gurung chose a non-violent path. He called upon students to appear in their school uniforms, carrying books, and gather peacefully outside the Parliament. His message spread like wildfire through the very social media channels the government sought to suppress. Within hours, thousands mobilized across the country. Even when police bullets claimed many lives, Sudan repeatedly urged protestors to remain peaceful and not fall into the trap of provocation. This strategy drew global attention to Nepal’s crisis.

Government Forced to Retreat

The scale of the protests and the international spotlight left the government with no option but to lift the ban. Overnight, Sudan Gurung’s name echoed across the nation. Without fiery political speeches, he guided the youth with calm determination and a clear vision. His leadership not only united Nepal’s Gen-Z but also highlighted a new model of modern activism.

What Next for Sudan Gurung?

The big question now is whether Sudan will enter mainstream politics. Regardless of what path he chooses, one fact is certain: he has already etched his name in Nepal’s history as the man who taught an entire generation how to fight for their rights. Sudan Gurung has emerged as a modern leader, showing that even silent yet focused movements can shake governments.
