Massive Blast Destroys Bucksnort Explosives Plant—19 Souls Missing
A devastating explosion rocked a military explosives facility in Bucksnort, Tennessee, on Friday morning, leaving 19 people missing and several confirmed dead. The blast, which occurred at Accurate Energetic Systems, was so powerful it was felt in nearby towns like Waverly and Dickson. Emergency responders, including the FBI and ATF, are now leading a full-scale investigation into what caused the destruction of this high-grade C-4 and TNT manufacturing plant, located just 56 miles southwest of Nashville.
What Happened at the Bucksnort Facility?
At approximately 7:48 a.m. CDT, a massive explosion erupted at the Accurate Energetic Systems plant, which spans over 1,300 acres in rural Hickman and Humphreys Counties. The facility specializes in the production and storage of military-grade explosives like C-4 and TNT.
According to Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis, the blast leveled the main building and scattered debris across a half-square-mile radius. Secondary explosions made it dangerous for first responders to approach immediately.
“There’s nothing to describe—it’s gone,” said Sheriff Davis, visibly shaken during his first press briefing.
Casualties and Missing Workers
Sheriff Davis confirmed that four to five people were hospitalized with minor injuries, while 19 individuals remain unaccounted for. He emotionally referred to them as “19 souls”, emphasizing the human toll of the tragedy.
Nearby hospitals in Dickson and Waverly treated walk-in patients, while others were transported for emergency care.
What Was Stored at the Site?
The facility was known for handling high-risk explosives, including C-4, TNT, and other military-grade materials. These substances are extremely volatile, and even minor mishandling can lead to catastrophic results.
Experts like Ken Cross, former President of the Institute of Explosives Engineers, noted that while the industry is “high-hazard,” it’s typically low-probability when safety protocols are followed.
Investigation Underway
The FBI and ATF have secured the site and declared it stable. However, the investigation is expected to be slow and methodical. Sheriff Davis stated that authorities are treating the situation with caution, not ruling out any possibilities—accidental or intentional.
Governor Bill Lee called the incident “tragic” and confirmed that state and federal agencies are working together to uncover the truth.
History of Explosions at the Site
This isn’t the first time tragedy struck this location. In 2014, a blast at the same site—then operated by Rio Ammunition—killed one person and injured three others.
Such incidents highlight the inherent risks of explosives manufacturing, even under strict regulations.
