Trump–Putin Alaska Summit Ends Without Agreement; India’s Tariff Fate Still Unclear
Trump–Putin Talks in Alaska Yield No Peace Deal, But Signals of Progress
The high-profile meeting between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska concluded after nearly three hours of discussion—without any formal agreement. The primary agenda was a potential ceasefire in Ukraine, but Trump confirmed afterward that no deal was reached. However, he emphasized that “progress was made” in talks with Putin.
Following the summit, both leaders addressed the media briefly for about ten minutes. Trump stated clearly, “No agreement was reached,” while Putin described the Ukraine crisis as a tragedy and expressed readiness to resolve it. He added that if Trump had been in office during 2020, the war might not have started—a sentiment Putin agreed with.
Putin stressed the need to eliminate the root causes of the conflict and urged Ukraine and European nations not to derail peace efforts. He called the Alaska meeting a “starting point” for future negotiations.
Putin also thanked Trump for approaching the talks with good intentions and acknowledged that both sides were focused on achieving results. He remarked, “Trump is clear about protecting his country’s interests, and he understands Russia has its own priorities too.”
In a lighter moment, Putin noted that despite oceans separating Russia and the U.S., they are “close neighbors,” pointing out that only four kilometers separate their borders. He greeted Trump with a casual “Hello, neighbor.”
Trump rated the meeting a “10 out of 10,” saying many issues saw agreement, though one major topic remained unresolved. He did not specify whether that issue was related to trade or the Ukraine war, but hinted that his priority was always “America’s business interests.”
Notably, Ukrainian President Zelensky and European leaders were not involved in this round of talks. Trump said he would speak with them soon and leave further decisions to their discretion. He also mentioned plans to meet Putin again, possibly in Moscow—an idea Putin welcomed.
After the meeting, both leaders shook hands and posed for photos but left the stage without answering reporters’ questions. In a Fox News interview, Trump reiterated his satisfaction with the summit and predicted future talks between Russia and Ukraine involving both Putin and Zelensky.
However, former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Douglas Lute criticized the outcome, saying Trump “achieved nothing” in his talks with Putin.
India’s Tariff Question Remains Unanswered
Despite speculation, neither Trump nor Putin addressed the issue of U.S. tariffs on Indian imports. While both leaders acknowledged that many topics were discussed—including the Ukraine war—Trump’s proposed tariffs on India were notably absent from the conversation.
Observers had expected the tariff issue to be central, especially given Trump’s earlier signals that if Russia agreed to a peace deal, India might be spared from additional duties. But with no mention of tariffs during the summit, analysts now believe India may face a 50% hike in import duties starting August 27.
Before the Alaska meeting, Trump had commented that if talks failed, Russia would lose a major oil client—India, which sources around 40% of its oil from Russia. He warned that secondary sanctions could be “devastating” and would be imposed only if necessary.
While neither leader admitted that trade negotiations had failed, the silence on tariffs has raised concerns. Russian media outlets suggest that the reason behind the tariffs may go beyond oil imports, hinting at deeper geopolitical motives.
As the deadline approaches, India braces for the impact of these additional tariffs, with only days left before they take effect.
