In a surprising turn, US President Donald Trump publicly reacted to not receiving the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, stating that Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, the actual laureate, called him to dedicate the award in his honour.
“She said, ‘I’m accepting this in honour of you because you really deserved it,’” Trump told reporters at the White House
Trump emphasized that he didn’t ask for the prize, but claimed he had helped Machado during Venezuela’s crisis.
Who Is Maria Corina Machado?
Maria Corina Machado was awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her decades-long fight for democracy in Venezuela. The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised her as a “brave and committed champion of peace” who continues to resist authoritarian rule under President Nicolás Maduro
“She keeps the flame of democracy burning amid a growing darkness,” the committee said
Machado dedicated the award to both the suffering people of Venezuela and President Trump, acknowledging his “decisive support”
Trump’s Peace Claims: “I Stopped Seven Wars”
Trump reiterated his belief that he deserved the Nobel Prize for his role in ending multiple global conflicts. He listed seven wars he claims to have halted, including:
- Armenia vs Azerbaijan
- Kosovo vs Serbia
- Israel vs Iran
- Egypt vs Ethiopia
- Rwanda vs Congo
- Ukraine vs Russia
“I should get a Nobel for each one,” Trump joked, adding that stopping the Russia-Ukraine war alone should qualify him

Netanyahu Backs Trump for Nobel Prize
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also voiced support for Trump, posting on X:
“Give @realDonaldTrump the Nobel Peace Prize – he deserves it!”
This endorsement added fuel to the debate over Trump’s peace efforts and global influence.
Nobel Committee’s Stand on Peace Prize
The Nobel Committee made it clear that Machado met all three criteria outlined in Alfred Nobel’s will. They emphasized that democracy is essential for lasting peace and warned of global trends toward authoritarianism
“In 2024, more elections were held than ever before, but fewer were free and fair,” the committee noted.
