Pune/New Delhi — Indian television actor Ashish Kapoor, known for his roles in popular serials like Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Molkki, and Dekha Ek Khwaab, has been arrested by Delhi Police in Pune on charges of rape following a complaint filed by a woman alleging sexual assault during a house party in Delhi.
Allegations and FIR Details
According to police reports, the complainant stated that she met Kapoor via Instagram and was later invited to a party at a friend’s residence in Delhi during the second week of August. The woman alleged that Kapoor sexually assaulted her inside a bathroom during the gathering.
An FIR was registered on August 11 at the Civil Lines police station, initially naming Kapoor, his friend (the host), the friend’s wife, and two unidentified men. The complainant also claimed that the incident was filmed, though police have not recovered any such footage.
Changing Statements and Legal Developments
The case took a turn when the woman revised her statement on August 18, alleging that only Kapoor had raped her, while the friend’s wife physically assaulted her. On August 21, Kapoor’s friend and his wife were granted anticipatory bail. The complainant was present during the hearing but did not name the friend in her submissions.
Police officials confirmed that CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts indicated Kapoor and the woman entered the bathroom together and remained inside for an extended period, prompting other guests to knock on the door. A heated argument reportedly followed, continuing until the group reached the society’s gate.
Arrest and Investigation
After the FIR was filed, police tracked Kapoor’s movements from Delhi to Goa and eventually to Pune, where he was arrested by a special team. DCP (North) Raja Banthia confirmed the arrest and stated that legal procedures are underway. The initial gangrape charges are expected to be modified to rape as the investigation progresses.
